Welcome The AVA Graduate Mentoring Program engages the Veterinarian professionals of today to support graduates to transition into the profession smoothly, to assist them to reach their full potential and to be happy in their jobs. The program aims to develop and sustain a satisfying professional career for veterinarians. To join as a mentee, you must be in your final year of veterinary study, about to commence work. We also welcome any AVA graduate members in their 2nd, 3rd or 4th year out to apply. To join as a mentor, you must have at least three years? experience in the profession, and be an AVA member. As a general rule, this program is only open for AVA members to participate as mentors. Any non-member participation will be considered on an individual basis, and will need a recommendation put forward by the respective AVA Division. Fees do not apply for mentees or mentors. What's Involved? The AVA Mentoring Program is a 12 month program commencing in July for CSU students and October for all other universities. Mentors and mentees will be matched according to application details and are required to attend three events - Program Launch, Mid-Program Review and Program Close, some of which will be face-to-face meetings while others will be delivered via webinars. During the program, mentors and mentees will be expected to be in contact at least monthly. Mentees and first-time mentors will also be expected to complete the Art of Mentoring program training either as arranged by your Division or online to prepare them for their mentoring relationship. Acceptance into the program is conditional upon your commitment to completion of the training. During the program, you will receive frequent communications from the AVA, giving you helpful tips and information about mentoring and access to other relevant materials available for supporting new graduates. Whether you're a mentor or a mentee, you will find mentoring a rewarding part of your experience as an AVA member. Applications will be open from 15 May 2018. Mentor DO's - COMMIT AT LEAST ONE INTERACTION/HOUR OF SUPPORT per month. - Set aside time for the mentoring process and honour all appointments. - Invite the mentee to meetings or activities, as appropriate. Schedule meetings with planned topics. - Be flexible on meeting times and places. - Arrange frequent contacts through telephone, email, fax, face-to-face, etc., as appropriate - Respond to emails from your mentee within 2 days of receipt. - Keep information that your mentee has shared with you confidential. If something concerning the mentee needs to be discussed with others, it should first be discussed within the mentoring relationship. - Establish open and honest communication and a forum for idea exchange. - Foster creativity and independence. Help build self-confidence and offer encouragement. - Provide honest and timely feedback to your mentee. - Provide opportunities for the mentee to talk about concerns and ask questions - Recognise if the mentee is not coping with an issue or may require professional help that is beyond your expertise - Provide the mentee with resources and solutions, for example, textbooks, internet sites, networking at AVA events - Help the mentee learn and improve communication skills if needed - Avoid intended or unintended use of power - Adjust mentoring to the needs of the mentee Above all, LISTEN. Mentor DON'Ts - Try to give advice on everything. - Encourage mentee to be totally dependent upon you. - Be too busy when the mentee needs your friendship or your support. If you do not have time, give the mentee a heads up, so that they know when they can reach you. - Criticise
MENTEE DO's - TAKE A PROACTIVE ROLE IN SHAPING UP THE RELATIONSHIP - Understand what you want from the mentoring relationship and communicate your goals and aspirations to your mentor. Balance personal and professional relationship with your mentor. - Set aside time for the mentoring process and keep all scheduled appointments with your mentor and display professional behavior. - PUT THE TIME WITH MENTOR TO THE BEST USE. Come to meetings with mentor prepared with planned topics. - Respond in a timely manner to your mentor's feedback. Respond to emails from your mentor at most two days after receipt. - Be open and honest with your mentor about your challenges and weaknesses. - If something concerning the mentor needs to be discussed with others, it should first be discussed within the mentoring relationship. - Recognise that learning client communication and clinical skills takes time and practice - Be willing to share your fears and concerns - Be open to seeking professional assistance - Aim to be an open and active listener, and understand constructive feedback is vital to continuous professional growth MENTEE DON'Ts - Ask for advice on everything. Have a purpose in each request. - Blame the mentor if his or her advice doesn't work out. - Expect the mentor to know all the answers. - Commit yourself to obligations you cannot keep. - Cancel meetings/visits with your mentor at the last minute.
